Set against the lush coastal landscape of South Carolina’s Johns Island, this stately residence channels the quiet elegance of European countryside estates. Designed by Stan Dixon and brought to life with richly layered interiors by Tammy Connor, the home reflects a timeless sensibility rooted in restraint, proportion, and craftsmanship.

Millwork Artisans was proud to collaborate on this distinguished project, supplying and installing a complete package of thermally broken bronze windows and doors. The goal: bring enduring performance and artisanal refinement to a palette defined by stone, limewash, and wide open southern light.

Our scope featured:

  • Lift-and-Slide Bronze Doors
    Engineered for effortless movement and durability, these large-format doors offer expansive openings to porches and gardens, all while preserving the fine bronze profiles and warmth of the patinated finish. Integrated flush tracks deliver seamless transitions underfoot.
  • Oversized Bronze French Doors
    Elegantly scaled and symmetrically aligned, the French doors act as architectural anchors throughout the home, reinforcing formality and proportion while maximizing natural light. Each unit was crafted with divided lites and thermally broken construction for year-round comfort.
  • Expansive Fixed Glass Assemblies
    Monumental bronze-framed windows flood the interiors with light, highlighting the home’s muted color palette and natural materials. These fixed units were custom-fabricated to align precisely with adjacent doors and millwork, preserving the home’s crisp visual language.

From the subtle texture of the bronze patina to the precision of the installation, every detail was considered and executed with care. A striking balance of warmth, sophistication, and structural clarity defines the Demmer Residence—a Southern estate reimagined through the collaborative vision of Historical Concepts and interior designer Barbara Westbrook. Nestled in a pastoral setting, the home marries classical design principles with fresh, contemporary restraint, achieving a harmony of tradition and transparency.

At the core of the architectural experience is light. Expansive glazing lines the residence, carefully proportioned to bring the outdoors in and saturate interiors with natural brightness. Millwork Artisans was proud to supply and install a custom package of thermally broken stainless steel windows and doors, chosen for both their refined aesthetic and performance durability.

Our contributions included:

  • Oversized Steel-Framed Windows and Doors
    These units establish strong vertical and horizontal rhythm while allowing broad, uninterrupted sightlines. The thermally broken construction ensures year-round energy efficiency, even as the expansive glass invites sunlight deep into the home.

Millwork Artisans was privileged to contribute a fully custom package of wood windows and doors, each handcrafted to reflect the architecture’s timeless spirit while honoring its Lowcountry vernacular roots.

Our scope included:

  • Traditional Wood Double-Hung Windows
    Designed with historically scaled sashes and authentic divided lite patterns, these windows provide ventilation, rhythm, and a sense of period-correct elegance. Custom profiles and casing details were matched to the home’s millwork.
  • Operable Casement Windows
    Select rooms feature wood casement units that allow full, unobstructed openings to breezes and views. Hardware and finish selections were tailored to complement the soft, collected interiors.
  • French Doors
    Tall, light-filled French doors open to porches, gardens, and galleries throughout the home, enhancing indoor-outdoor flow and reinforcing the architectural symmetry.
  • Custom Entry Door with Applied Moldings & Leaded Glass
    The home’s main entry is a showpiece of artisanal detail—a bespoke wood door featuring hand-applied panel moldings and leaded glass inserts that catch the light and nod to historical precedent. This signature element sets the tone for the craftsmanship found throughout the residence.

Tradd Residence – Charleston, South Carolina

A seamless conversation between past and present, the Tradd Residence is a rare jewel in the heart of Charleston’s historic district. Originally built in the 17th century, this storied home has been thoughtfully reimagined with the addition of a glass hyphen and a striking modern rear extension. Designed by Beau Clowney Design and built by Simco Inc. of Charleston, the residence honors centuries of architectural heritage while embracing a distinctly contemporary lifestyle.

Millwork Artisans played a central role in realizing the architectural vision—bridging the home’s historic fabric with its bold new identity through finely crafted elements inside and out.

Our scope included:

  • Custom Sipo Mahogany True Divided Lite Double-Hung Windows
    Fabricated to meet the strict standards of Charleston’s historic preservation guidelines, these windows feature traditional profiles, hand-fit joinery, and rich, stained finishes. Their timeless geometry anchors the restored façade and ties seamlessly into the original architecture.
  • Dramatic Custom Entry Door
    The front entry was designed to make a statement—crafted from solid Sipo, detailed with classic moldings, and finished to enhance both its scale and historic significance.
  • Full Interior Millwork Package
    Millwork Artisans supplied and installed all interior architectural elements, including custom mantels, crown moldings, interior doors, cabinetry, and built-ins. Each piece was tailored to complement the home’s layered aesthetic, showcasing  traditional craftsmanship
  • Stainless Steel Windows & Doors – Modern Addition
    In the home’s contemporary rear extension, we introduced thermally broken stainless steel fenestration, bringing a crisp, modern edge to the space. The slim profiles and expansive glass contrast beautifully with the warmth of the woodwork up front, creating a dramatic shift in tone while maintaining a cohesive visual language.

    Unique design and detail pays homage to the Vernacular architecture while providing modern functionality

Timeless charm and sophisticated scale define The Dowager Inn, a meticulously crafted residence conceived by Historical Concepts with interiors by Bryan Graybill. Rooted in classical formality yet adapted for luxurious modern living, the home draws inspiration from historic Southern inns, interpreted with a light hand and deliberate grandeur.

Millwork Artisans provided a full suite of custom window and door systems that elevate the architectural rhythm and functionality of the home. Every opening was designed not only to bring in light and air, but to reinforce the Inn’s unmistakable sense of permanence and presence.

Our scope included:

  • Large Format Double-Hung Windows
    These over-scaled units establish vertical grandeur while maintaining traditional detailing and operability. Divided lites and historically proportioned stiles and rails offer authenticity with modern performance.
  • Bi-Folding Casement Systems
    Where flexibility and openness were desired, we delivered outward-opening bi-folding casement windows, perfect for seasonal living spaces.
  • French Doors & Lift-and-Slide Pocketing Doors
    A blend of classic and contemporary, traditional French doors were used in formal rooms, while flush-track lift-and-slide systems pocket into adjacent walls, blurring the line between indoors and out in entertaining areas.
  • Custom Carriage Doors
    Oversized wood carriage doors—designed in collaboration with the architecture team—were fabricated for garage and utility structures, providing a distinctive presence with concealed modern hardware and smooth, balanced operation.

Each unit was meticulously crafted to complement the Inn’s traditional massing and natural material palette. From the finely milled joinery to the seamless integration of concealed tracks and high-performance glazing, every detail reflects our commitment to enduring craftsmanship.

    These operable wood units were crafted with historically inspired proportions, with divided lite detailing, and a rich, natural finish. They bring warmth and authenticity to the home’s envelope while meeting modern performance standards.
  • Sipo French and Lift-and-Slide Doors
    Traditional French doors provide rhythm and verticality throughout the formal spaces, while large-scale lift-and-slide doors connect the gym area to terraces and gardens. Flush tracks allow seamless transitions between interior and exterior.

This Jon Grossman Builders design-build project blends contemporary lines with timeless textures to create a home that is as inviting as it is architecturally refined.

Millwork Artisans was proud to contribute to this vision by fabricating and installing a series of high-performance, custom-crafted fenestration solutions tailored specifically for this project. Products included:

  • Stained Sipo Lift-and-Slide Doors
    Massive glass panels framed in rich, stained Sipo wood open effortlessly to the outdoors, providing seamless transitions from interior living spaces to the expansive lawn and pool terrace. The lift-and-slide hardware ensures both robust weather sealing and minimal operating force.
  • Casement Windows
