Project Spotlight: The Claxton Residence

A Fictional Warehouse Reimagined into an Iconic Coastal Home

Tucked into a quiet corner of the coast, The Claxton Residence is not your typical new construction. At first glance, it appears to be a meticulously restored industrial building—
but a closer look reveals something far more imaginative: a masterfully crafted narrative built from fragments of history, architectural storytelling, and a bold vision brought to life.
Designed by Historical Concepts and Designer/Owner Bryan Graybill, this home is the architectural equivalent of historical fiction. The design team took inspiration from a real
piece of local history—a warehouse that once occupied the site and was traversed by an elevated railroad from the late 19th century to the mid-20th. When old photographs of the
demolished structure surfaced in a local museum, they served as a springboard for what would become a creative reinterpretation rather than a strict restoration.
“We re-created a warehouse first,” says Andrew Cogar of Historical Concepts, “and then evolved it into a house.”
The result is something deeply layered—a home that feels simultaneously old and new, rooted and contemporary, industrial and inviting.

Millwork Artisans’ Role in the Story

Millwork Artisans was proud to help bring this fictional narrative to life through our complete wood fenestration package—tailored to blur the line between historic warehouse and luxury residence.

Sipo Mahogany Windows and Doors

We supplied custom Carriage doors with integral casement windows, expansive folding windows in the parlor, and passage doors, fabricated in richly grained and painted Sipo
Mahogany, offering warmth, weight, and historical texture. These traditional window styles help ground the design in classical symmetry while delivering modern performance.

Monumental Entry Door

Architecture as Storytelling

“We took parts of history that were true but twisted them to be more fun and adventurous than the original narrative,” says Graybill.
And that’s exactly what makes The Claxton Residence so unforgettable. It’s not just a beautiful home—it’s a story told through architecture, material, and detail. Millwork
Artisans is honored to have played a part in shaping that story, one window, one door, and one crafted detail at a time.
